If you have purchased a motor vehicle in Texas our outside of Texas and you are a Texas resident you need to transfer the title on the vehicle within 30 days to avoid penalties. This is a standard rule and it applies to those who purchase a trailer, boat, motorcycle, car, ATV or UTV, truck, tractor trailer, classic vehicle or motorcycle, etc. If the seller did not have the title and you are not able to contact the registered owner so you can obtain a certified copy of the title so you can transfer the title into your name you will need to file for a bonded title. If you purchase a vehicle and it is a project vehicle you are still required to transfer the title within 30 days of purchase to avoid from being charged state penalties. Texas will allow you to transfer the motor vehicle title as title only to ensure you are not charged penalties for the title transfer. When you purchase a vehicle, vessel, trailer, or motorcycle from an individual be sure the seller provides you with a bill of sale signed and dated (bill of sale must also contain the vehicle description) or signed Texas title application (130-u). If you are considering purchasing a motor vehicle that does not have the title be sure to get the VIN and the miles from the seller so we can do research to make sure we are able to get a title and have the registration and license plates transferred into your name.
